Can people with heart conditions exercise
Some people recovering from cardiac treatment can undertake supervised activity as part of a personalized plan. Unstable symptoms require medical assessment first.
What cardiac rehabilitation involves
Cardiac rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary program including individual assessment, supervised activity where indicated, education and risk-factor management.
Assessment before activity
The treating team may review diagnosis, symptoms, blood pressure, heart rate, investigations, medication and daily activity tolerance.
Starting after medical clearance
Light activities such as level-ground walking may be appropriate for some patients following an approved plan. Do not copy heart-rate targets or exercise intensity from general advice.
When to stop
Unusual breathlessness, dizziness, palpitations or excessive fatigue require stopping and seeking appropriate medical advice. Suspected cardiac chest pain, severe breathlessness or collapse requires emergency assistance; call 1669 in Thailand.
Rehabilitation at home
For selected medically stable patients, home activities may form part of an individualized plan. They do not replace a full multidisciplinary cardiac rehabilitation program.
Supporting a family member
Families can keep the environment safe and help watch for symptoms. Avoid pushing activity beyond the clinical plan.
A safe next step
Discuss fitness for home physiotherapy with the treating team. Chokdee Physio can discuss home assessment via LINE for non-emergency situations.
